Bioenergetics Primer for Exercise Science

Preserving energy or having efficient energy transfer is a gateway to the success of many athletic performances. On the other hand, in our contemporary world, filled as it is with conveniences, maximizing energy expenditure has been advocated as a top priority for each of us. In light of the fact that energy is needed to power muscular activity but that excessive energy storage can lead to obesity and other metabolic disorders, it is important to understand what energy transformation is all about, how energy expenditure can be assessed and quantified, and what strategies either can augment energy provision to enhance performance or can maximize energy utilization to facilitate weight loss or maintain optimal body weight.

This book was written in recognition of the fact that energy storage and transfer are essential to health, fitness, and sport performance. The book provides a contemporary review of a broad spectrum of materials related to energy metabolism. It brings together diverse issues that are of theoretical interest and of practical importance. As reflected in the table of contents, the book not only covers the physiological basis of bioenergetics but also provides practical information that can be readily used, such as guidelines for measuring energy expenditure and fuel utilization, choosing the right exercise program to maximize energy expenditure, working with energy balance equations, and selecting an appropriate nutritional supplement to facilitate energy expenditure. The 12 chapters are organized into four parts, each of which has a distinct focus. Part I conveys basic information that readers need to know before pursuing more advanced topics in bioenergetics; part II centers on ideas for applying information pertaining to bioenergetics; part III characterizes the uniqueness and specificity of energy transformation; and part IV emphasizes overweight and obesity and strategies for maximizing energy expenditure.

This book is unique in many respects. It encompasses all aspects of current information regarding energy metabolism. It combines theory with practice and serves as a “one-stop shop” for those who are interested in building their knowledge base and at the same time want to know how they may apply what they learn in their daily practice. To make learning more effective, each chapter includes an introduction and a summary, key points, and study questions.

Nutrition and Metabolism in Sports, Exercise, and Health

A key determinant of successful athletic performance is the high-level energy transfor¬mation, which begins with combustion of the food we eat. By developing a sound understanding of good nutrition we can improve athletic performance, help maintain good health and prevent disease. This clear and comprehensive introduction to nutri¬tion in sport, exercise and health goes further than any other textbook in integrating key nutritional facts, concepts and dietary guidelines with a thorough discussion of the fundamental biological science underpinning our physiological and metabolic pro¬cesses. By clearly explaining how nutrients function within our biological system, the book helps students to develop a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms, which in turn will help the student to apply their knowledge in practice.

The book includes in-depth discussion of key contemporary topics within nutri¬tion, including:

• nutrient bioenergetics;
• nutrition and metabolic disease;
• nutritional ergogenic aids;
• nutrition for special populations;
• nutritional assessment.

Each chapter includes useful pedagogical features, such as, review questions, defini¬tions of key terms and practical laboratory exercises, including techniques for assessing nutritional status, body composition and physical activity patterns. A companion website offers additional teaching and learning features, such as PowerPoint slides, multiple-choice question banks and web links.

As the most up-to-date introduction to sport and exercise nutrition currently avail¬able, this book is essential reading for all students of sport and exercise science, kinesi¬ology, physical therapy, nutrition, dietetics or health sciences.
